What This Idea Means
Children learn open-lattice knotting. By spacing their knots further apart, they create open diamond-shaped windows that allow warm LED light to shine through while keeping the glass securely held.
What You Need
- 1 clean, label-free 500ml glass mason jar
- 1 rim holding cord (40cm of 3mm cotton cord)
- 8 body cords of 3mm cotton cord (80cm each)
- Battery-powered warm white LED fairy lights
- Scissors
How to Make It
- Tie the 40cm rim cord snugly around the threaded neck of the glass jar with a firm double knot. Trim excess tail.
- Mount the 8 long cords evenly around the circumference of the rim cord using Lark’s Head knots (16 hanging strands spaced around the jar).
- Place the jar upside down on a table to make knotting easier.
- Take one strand from a knot pair and an adjacent strand from the next pair. Tie a simple Overhand Knot 2.5cm below the rim. Repeat all the way around the jar to complete the first ring of diamonds.
- Move down another 2.5cm and repeat the cross-pairing process to form the second tier of diamond netting.
- Continue this open knotting sequence until you reach the lower base curve of the jar.
- Gather all 16 strands at the center bottom of the jar base. Tie them together with a tight Gathering Knot or a large overhand knot to secure the base.
- Turn the jar right-side up, trim any excess bottom cord to a neat 2cm mini tassel, and drop the battery fairy light string inside.
Tips and Variations
- Tip: Use a little painter’s tape on the base of the jar while working to keep your hanging strands from sliding out of alignment.
- Variation: Drop a couple of drops of lavender essential oil onto the cotton fringe to turn the lantern into a gentle room diffuser.
