6. Boho Hair Clip Barrette Accents
Introduction
Turning macrame into wearable accessories lets kids showcase their craft projects every day. These micro-macrame barrettes snap directly onto hairpins and alligator clips, creating a chic cottagecore accessory.
What This Idea Means
Miniature knotting develops refined micro-motor control. Children work with thinner 1.5mm to 2mm cords mounted directly onto hair clip metal bars, teaching adaptability with smaller tools.
What You Need
- 2 lengths of 2mm braided cotton cord or linen thread (60cm each)
- 1 blank metal alligator hair clip or snap barrette (5cm to 7cm long)
- Fast-drying clear craft adhesive (or adult-assisted hot glue)
- Precision scissors
How to Make It
- Open the metal barrette. Mount both 2mm cords onto the upper top bar of the metal clip using two tight Lark’s Head knots near the hinge.
- Lay the 4 cord strands across the top face of the clip.
- Work a tight vertical sequence of Half-Square Spiral knots: cross the far-left cord over the two middle cords and under the right cord, then take the right cord behind and through the left loop. Pull tight.
- Continue repeating this left-handed movement without alternating. The knots will naturally twist into a spiraling spiral braid that encases the metal clip face.
- Once you reach the end of the clip, tie off the working cords with a tight double knot on the underside.
- Apply a tiny dot of clear craft glue onto the final knot and underneath the cord ends to lock them to the metal clip.
- Allow the glue to cure for 15 minutes, then trim away any excess cord flush against the clip base.
Tips and Variations
- Tip: Use a little strip of double-sided tape along the metal bar before knotting to keep the cords from sliding while small hands work.
- Variation: Glue small pastel seed beads or dried baby’s breath flowers into the knot crevices for a vintage touch.
