13. Macrame Picture Frame & Polaroids Border
Introduction
A tactile way for kids to display mini instant photos, vacation pictures, or art postcards. The macrame border acts as a textured frame that clips easily onto any pinboard.

What This Idea Means
This project teaches children to frame open spaces. They learn how to anchor corners and knot clean horizontal borders without warping the opening for the photograph.
What You Need
- 4 lengths of 3mm cotton cord (80cm each)
- 2 slim wooden craft sticks or 15cm wooden dowels
- 2 mini wooden clothespins
- 1 favorite instant photo or mini print
- Scissors and tape
How to Make It
- Tape the two wooden dowels parallel to each other on your table, spaced about 12cm apart (slightly taller than your photo).
- Mount the 4 cords across the top dowel using Lark’s Head knots (8 hanging strands).
- Tie two rows of alternating Square Knots along the top dowel to create a decorative top header band.
- Let the cords drop down past the open photo window. Mount them onto the bottom dowel using Double Half-Hitch knots to form the bottom frame.
- Tie two more rows of alternating Square Knots right below the lower dowel.
- Trim the remaining hanging cords to a neat 4cm bottom fringe and comb it out soft.
- Attach your photo to the top dowel inside the open window using the mini wooden clothespins.
Tips and Variations
- Tip: Measure your photo first to make sure your dowels are spaced wide enough so the knots do not cover the picture.
- Variation: Add small dried flowers into the wooden clothespins along with the photo for a botanical look.
