7. Friendship Spiral Bracelet Stack
Introduction
A timeless classic updated with modern bohemian palettes. Macrame friendship bracelets replace thin embroidery floss with soft 2mm cotton cords, making the knotting motions easy to see and comfortable to handle.

What This Idea Means
This project builds confidence through steady repetition. Kids practice the difference between a complete flat Square Knot (which alternates sides) and a Half-Square Knot (which knots on one side only to create a 3D spiral helix).
What You Need
- 1 core cord of 2mm colored cotton cord (50cm long)
- 1 working cord of 2mm contrast-colored cotton cord (120cm long)
- 1 small wooden button or round wooden bead (10mm)
- Clipboard to hold cords securely
How to Make It
- Fold the 50cm core cord in half to form a 1.5cm loop at the top. Clip this loop under the clip of your clipboard.
- Center the 120cm working cord behind the two hanging core cords directly below the loop.
- Begin tying Half-Square Knots continuously: take the left working cord, cross it over the center cores, place the right working cord over that, thread it behind the center cores, and pull it out through the left loop.
- Pull the knot firmly toward the top loop.
- Repeat the exact same left-sided knot step repeatedly. As you add knots, the braid will naturally rotate around the core cords. Allow it to twist freely.
- Continue knotting until the spiral braid reaches 12cm to 14cm (sized to the child’s wrist).
- Thread both center core cords through the hole of your wooden button or bead.
- Tie all four cord ends into a firm Overhand Knot directly underneath the bead to secure it. Trim the remaining tail fringe to 1.5cm.
- To wear, slide the wooden bead through the top starting loop.
Tips and Variations
- Tip: If the spiral braid starts twisting unevenly, push the knots upward on the core cords to pack them together.
- Variation: Craft a stack of three bracelets in monochromatic tones (e.g., ecru, warm sand, and soft camel) to wear together.
