18. Macrame Lollipop & Ice Cream Cone Ornaments

Introduction

These playful, food-themed fiber ornaments are great for bags, holiday trees, or pretend play setups. They are quick to tie and let kids experiment with fun pastel colors.

What This Idea Means

This project teaches kids how to sculpt shapes through cord wrapping and tapering. They learn how to build wide tops that narrow down into pointed bases.

What You Need

  • 1 natural wooden craft stick or cinnamon stick (10cm long)
  • 1 length of 5mm thick pastel cotton rope (60cm long)
  • 2 lengths of 2mm ecru cotton cord (100cm each)
  • Clear craft glue and scissors

How to Make It

  1. To make an ice cream cone: tape the wooden craft stick vertically on your desk to serve as the cone base.
  2. Coil your 5mm thick pastel rope into a flat circular spiral to represent the ice cream scoop, applying thin lines of craft glue between the coils to hold the shape.
  3. Glue the pastel rope swirl securely to the top half of your wooden stick.
  4. Take the 2mm ecru cotton cords and tie a series of crisscrossing Half-Hitch knots over the lower half of the stick to create a textured waffle-cone pattern.
  5. Tie off the bottom cords with a tight double knot on the back of the stick and secure with a drop of glue.
  6. Trim any excess cord tails flush against the back.
  7. Add a small cord loop to the top of the ice cream swirl to hang your finished ornament.

Tips and Variations

  • Tip: Use a real cinnamon stick instead of a craft stick to give the ornament a natural sweet scent.
  • Variation: Stack two smaller rope spirals in pink and mint green to make a double-scoop ice cream cone.
