3. Mini Hanging Air Plant Pod

Introduction

Pairing living botanical elements with hand-tied textile fibers gives kids a living craft to care for. These miniature hanging cradles sit gracefully on bedroom window latches, holding resilient, soil-free air plants (Tillandsia).

What This Idea Means

Children learn the concept of creating three-dimensional spatial netting out of flat, paired cord arrays. It demonstrates structural tension—how evenly spaced knots work together to suspend a delicate organic object safely.

What You Need

  • 4 lengths of 3mm braided cotton cord (120cm each)
  • 1 untreated wooden craft ring (50mm diameter)
  • 1 air plant (Tillandsia ionantha)
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors

How to Make It

  1. Thread all 4 cords through the wooden ring, centering them so you have 8 equal strands hanging down (60cm drop).
  2. Gather the strands right below the wooden ring and secure them with a 3cm Gathering Knot using a separate 30cm piece of scrap cord.
  3. Group the 8 hanging cords into 4 distinct pairs (2 strands per pair).
  4. Measure 10cm down from the gathering knot. Tie a simple Overhand Knot or half-square knot on each of the 4 cord pairs.
  5. Measure 4cm down from those knots. Take one cord from one pair and one adjacent cord from the neighboring pair; tie them together with an Overhand Knot. Repeat around all cords to create an interlocking cylindrical basket mesh.
  6. Measure down another 4cm and repeat the cross-pairing step.
  7. Gather all 8 cords together 3cm below the final knot tier and tie a firm, secure Gathering Knot to form the base pocket.
  8. Trim the tassel ends evenly and place the air plant carefully into the woven basket center.

Tips and Variations

  • Tip: Keep the distance between knot tiers equal so the plant pocket sits level without tilting.
  • Variation: Slip single wooden accent beads onto the cords before tying the second row of knots to create a beaded cage effect.
