10. Macrame Bookmark with Fluffy Tassel

Introduction

Encourage daily reading habits with a slim, flat-woven macrame bookmark that rests between book pages without damaging the binding.

What This Idea Means

This project focuses on keeping work thin, flat, and compact. Children learn how to maintain snug knot tension on flat surfaces while creating balanced end tassels.

What You Need

  • 4 lengths of 2mm single-strand cotton cord (90cm each)
  • 1 wooden ring or 5cm dowel anchor pin (or a clip on a sturdy clipboard)
  • Slicker comb and sharp scissors

How to Make It

  1. Fold the 4 cords in half and secure them under a clipboard clamp, creating 8 working strands.
  2. Row 1: Tie two Square Knots across all 8 strands (4 strands per knot).
  3. Row 2: Skip the outer 2 strands on each side and tie one alternating Square Knot using the 4 center strands.
  4. Repeat this alternating pattern (Row 1, then Row 2) down the length of the cords until your flat woven band measures about 15cm to 18cm long.
  5. Tie all strands together at the base using a neat, tight Wrapping Knot.
  6. Cut the remaining loose cords 6cm below the finishing knot.
  7. Comb out the tail strands thoroughly with your slicker brush to create a flat, fluffy bookmark tassel.
  8. Trim the bottom edge cleanly with fabric scissors.

Tips and Variations

  • Tip: Using thinner 2mm cord ensures the finished bookmark stays slim enough to sit flat inside a closed book.
  • Variation: Thread tiny flat wooden beads onto the two outer edge cords every fourth row to add subtle texture.
