16. Chunky Macrame Curtain Tiebacks
Introduction
A quick bedroom upgrade that gives kids a functional piece for their living space. These tiebacks hold window curtains open while adding a warm, handmade touch to the room.
What This Idea Means
This project teaches structural load-bearing knots. Children build thick, durable braided ropes finished with secure rings that can handle daily pulling and holding.
What You Need
- 4 lengths of 4mm 3-ply cotton cord (2 meters each)
- 2 natural wooden craft rings (50mm diameter)
- Scissors and tape
How to Make It
- Fold all 4 cords in half. Loop them through the first wooden ring using Lark’s Head knots (8 working strands).
- Tape the wooden ring firmly to your table.
- Work continuous alternating Square Knots: tie two Square Knots in Row 1, skip 2 outer strands and tie one Square Knot in Row 2.
- Continue knotting until the braided band reaches 45cm to 50cm in length.
- Thread the 8 loose cord ends through the second wooden ring from back to front.
- Fold the cord ends back over the ring and tie a tight Gathering Knot around the base of the strap using a separate 30cm scrap cord.
- Trim the remaining tail fringe close to the knot and add a tiny dab of clear craft glue for security.
- Loop the finished tieback around your window curtains, securing both wooden rings onto a wall hook.
Tips and Variations
- Tip: Pull each Square Knot firmly to keep the tieback sturdy so it doesn’t stretch out over time.
- Variation: Use two contrasting cord colors (like navy blue and natural cream) to create a striking checkerboard pattern.
