5. Mobile Rolling Lumbar Cart & Sheet Goods Organizer
Introduction
Plywood scraps, 2×4 cutoffs, and metal pipes lean dangerously against garage corners without dedicated storage. A compact vertical sheet-goods cart on locking caster wheels organizes raw materials cleanly.
What This Idea Means
A heavy-duty rolling cart designed with an angled A-frame spine on one side for large sheet goods and categorized vertical storage cubbies on the other side for pipes, trim, and scrap wood.
Materials Needed
- Two sheets of 3/4-inch CDX construction plywood
- Four 2×4 dimensional lumber boards
- Four 3-inch heavy-duty locking swivel caster wheels
- 2-inch and 3-inch pocket hole or wood screws
How to Make It
- Build a rigid rectangular base frame from 2×4 lumber (roughly 24 inches wide by 48 inches long) and deck it with 3/4-inch plywood.
- Bolt four locking caster wheels to the bottom four corners of the base frame.
- Construct an angled upright center partition using 2×4 uprights clad in plywood, tilted at a safe 10-degree back angle.
- Attach horizontal shelf dividers and vertical upright stalls on the rear side to create segmented sorting bins for long dowels, pipes, and small offcuts.
- Paint the exterior in a dark industrial charcoal tone to resist scuffs and sawdust stains.
Tips and Variations
- Add side-mounted metal wire baskets on the ends to catch quick clamps, measuring tapes, and safety glasses.
- Line the base tray with ribbed rubber runner matting to prevent sheets from slipping while rolling the cart across uneven floors.
