10. Heavy-Duty DIY Vertical Tire & Wheel Storage Rack
Introduction
Bulky seasonal winter tires or spare wheel sets take up tremendous floor real estate. Storing them off the ground along a high wall keeps them safe, clean, and completely out of the parking clearance zone.
What This Idea Means
A strong, minimalist cantilevered wall-mounted frame engineered from steel industrial pipe fittings or structural 2×4 lumber that cradles four passenger tires securely against the upper wall studs.
Materials Needed
- 1.25-inch black iron threaded gas pipe (two 48-inch lengths, four 90-degree elbows, four pipe flanges)
- Heavy 3/8-inch by 4-inch steel lag bolts
- Matte black metal primer and anti-rust paint
- Stud finder, socket wrench, and long carpenter level
How to Make It
- Locate and mark three adjacent wall studs along your upper garage wall, well above car hood clearance height.
- Assemble two cantilevered shelf brackets using black iron pipe flanges, short spacer nipples, 90-degree elbows, and 48-inch crossbar pipes.
- Clean iron pipes thoroughly with mineral spirits to remove industrial grease, then apply two coats of ultra-matte black enamel.
- Align the flanges with the marked studs and drive 3/8-inch lag bolts with washers directly into the solid wood framing.
- Verify that the distance between the front and rear horizontal bars creates an open cradle that supports tire treads securely without letting wheels fall through.
- Lift seasonal tires into place, storing them vertically like books on a library shelf.
Tips and Variations
- Wrap high-friction foam tubing or rubber insulation around the iron pipes to prevent direct metal-on-alloy wheel rim scratches.
- Ensure tires are completely clean and sealed in dark wheel bags before racking to avoid wall scuffing and rubber degradation.
