17. The DIY Pro-Grade Sports Equipment Gear Locker
Introduction
Footballs, basketballs, soccer balls, yoga mats, and hockey sticks create rolling floor clutter. A dedicated plywood sports locker keeps athletic gear organized and easy to grab.
What This Idea Means
A tall open-front modular locker featuring elastic cord ball-troughs, vertical bat/stick tubes, and dedicated open shelf cubbies for helmets, cleats, and roller skates.
Materials Needed
- One sheet of 3/4-inch CDX or sanded pine plywood
- 1/4-inch elastic shock cord with tie-off hooks
- 2-inch pocket hole screws and wood glue
- Matte finish clear sealer or water-based accent paint
How to Make It
- Cut plywood panels to form a tall narrow cabinet box (roughly 60 inches tall, 20 inches wide, and 16 inches deep).
- Dedicate the lower half of the cabinet as a ball corral, drilling four pairs of vertical eye holes on the front face frame.
- Thread elastic shock cords vertically through the holes to create a flexible tension wall where balls can be slid in and pulled out without untying anything.
- Assemble two upper horizontal storage cubbies for athletic shoes, protective helmets, and gym gloves.
- Mount two 3-inch PVC tubes to the cabinet exterior side panel to hold baseball bats, tennis rackets, and hockey sticks.
- Anchor the locker securely to the garage wall studs with two upper bracket screws to eliminate tipping risk.
Tips and Variations
- Paint the locker in school colors or a deep sporting navy blue with custom stencil numbers on each cubby.
- Mount dual coat hooks on the side to hang sports jerseys, mesh laundry bags, and workout gear.
