19. Hand-Etched Western Mirror with Silver Inlay Detailing
Introduction
A substantial vanity mirror housed in dark, heavy timber, featuring classic frontier scrollwork etched directly onto the glass perimeter using etching cream and bordered with antiqued silver upholstery studs.
What This Idea Means
Ornate mirrors brought a touch of elegance to rugged frontier hotels and homes. This project balances rough wood framing with delicate, frost-etched filigree and polished metal accents.
Needs & Materials
- 1 plain wood-framed wall mirror ($20\times30$ inches)
- Adhesive vinyl stencil with Western filigree scroll patterns
- Chemical glass etching cream (Armour Etch)
- Stiff nylon applicator brush
- Rubber gloves and protective eyewear
- Strip of antiqued nickel/silver upholstery decorative nails
- Tack hammer
How to Make It
- Clean the mirror glass with rubbing alcohol to remove grease and lint.
- Apply the vinyl filigree stencil firmly along the top corners or outer margins of the mirror glass, using a squeegee to burnish down all edges and prevent seepage.
- Put on gloves and eye protection. Apply a thick, even layer of glass etching cream over the stencil openings using a stiff nylon brush.
- Let the cream sit undisturbed for 5–8 minutes so the active chemicals etch the glass surface.
- Rinse the mirror thoroughly under warm running water to remove all chemical residue. Peel away the vinyl stencil and dry the glass to reveal frosted glass scrollwork.
- Space decorative silver upholstery tacks at 1-inch intervals around the inner wooden frame border, driving them in with a tack hammer.
Tips & Variations
- Tip: Ensure the stencil is sealed flat against the glass; even a tiny air bubble along a cut line will allow etching cream to bleed and soften crisp patterns.
- Variation: Mix a tiny drop of gold leaf pigment into clear glass sealer and brush it lightly over the etched design to catch light with a warm metallic shimmer.
